Slavens is widely known as a great school offering a solid sense of community, a dedicated staff, an innovative curriculum, and a strong leadership team.

The school was constructed in 1956, but closed in 1982, as a result of a declining school population. The school was closed for 14 years, before a group of passionate former students and community members convinced DPS to reopen it in 1996.

Today, the school, one of the top-performing schools in DPS, prides itself on radiating “a spirit of warmth, discipline, humor and excellence,” along with offering a “challenging academic program that supports every child as a learner of worth and dignity.”  The school personalizes “teaching to ensure that all students learn to read critically, write effectively, speak articulately, and think logically and creatively in all disciplines including mathematics, the sciences and social studies.”

Slavens flourishes with the help of Friends of Slavens School (FOSS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to funding things that aren’t covered by Denver Public Schools, including paying the salaries for the music and drama teachers, and supporting the school’s art, music, musical theater, Spanish, mathematics, technology, and band programs.
